LEARNING LOG WEEK 9

MATH: I've been working on multiplying big numbers.  I also have been working with my dominos with my brother.  We've made a lot of fun designs and figured out how to make big projects work.

LANGUAGE ARTS:  I read a book about farm animals.  I also worked on my handwriting and spelling.  I did some artwork too.

SCIENCE:  I'm still learning about water.  The terrarium plants are getting bigger.  I learned about saturation.  When there's too much water in the dirt if you put more water it just runs down the side because it can't soak it up.

ENGINEERING:  I worked on my catapult and tried it out with a basketball hoop.  It's fun to make things and play games with them.

KARATE:  I am getting ready for my test.  I'm going for my orange belt.  I helped my friend learn the first form for his test.  He wants to be a purple belt.

LEARNING LOG WEEK 8

MATH: This week was complicated.  It was fun, but hard and it took awhile.  I had to write out all the problems and it became a little hard.  I multiplied big numbers like 45 x 56 then you separate it on a rectangle to be (40+5) x (50+6).  Then you add up all the boxes.  A fun thing that makes it easier to do is when the numbers have zeros at the end you just take the first numbers and multiply them and then add the zeros and there's your answer.

LANGUAGE ARTS: I did handwriting and drew a picture of a dog and a little baby chicken.  I read 20 minutes a day.  I did All About Reading worksheets too.

SCIENCE:  I went to the museum and learned about fossils and dinosaurs.  My favorite bones to see were the Brachiosaurus ones.  We also made pictures of the water cycle this week.  The water evaporates to water vapor and goes up into the clouds where it cools off and turns back into a liquid which is condensation.  Then it rains down called precipitation.  I also used play dough to create an island with a river, an ocean, a bay, a gulf, a straight and a lake.  Most of the water on our earth is salt water.  We looked at a map that shows that.

ENGINEERING: I built a basketball hoop.  First we looked at the instructions.  I already built a sling shot.  Then we put the basketball hoop together.  It would tell you how to print out certain things that you would need for it.  We also cut out cardboard to make it a strong basketball hoop and glued it all together.

KARATE: Next I am testing for my orange belt.  Today I got my last stripe so that means I'm ready to test.  One of my friends in karate is a white belt and wants to be a purple belt but doesn't know the first form so I helped him out with it.

LEARNING LOG WEEK 7

MATH: I did multiplication.  Say it’s 58 x 67.  You would put (50+8) x (60+ 7).  Then you put (50x60) + (50x7)+ (8x60) + (8x7). Then you would solve those and add them together.  An easy way to do it is if you’re multiplying numbers that have zeros at the end then you could just take the zeros off...multiply the numbers...then add the zeros at the end.

LANGUAGE ARTS: I did some worksheets in All About Reading.  I did handwriting and writing.  I colored a picture of a farmhouse.  I been reading a classics book.

SCIENCE:  We got a jar and we made a terrarium.  We put charcoal to help with mold problems, then put rocks, then dirt over top of the rocks.  Then we put seeds in there and water.  Now we never have to water it again because the water will heat up from the sun and turn into water vapor.  Then it cools down and turns back to a liquid and drops down.

ENGINEERING:  I built a catapult.  The Tinker Crate gave me some balls, and I built a score board.  There’s a bunch of square blocks, some of them have holes.  You pull the catapult back and try to score in one of the holes.  There’s also a scoreboard.  The little ones are worth 2 points and the big ones are worth one.

KARATE: I’ve been mostly just reviewing my punches and kicks.  I was doing my one-steps with my friend, Paxton.  He’s a green belt.  I showed everyone the forms I know.  I know 3 forms.  One of them is called gichyonilbu.  Then gixhionbusilbusongup.  Then gixhionyebu.

LEARNING LOG WEEK 6

MATH: I did symmetry again.  I had to split shapes to they were perfect symmetry or fold them or split them or add on a block or take away a block.  There's line symmetry where you just divide the shape or there's rotational symmetry where you can turn the shape and then it looks the exact same.

LANGUAGE ARTS:  I did handwriting and writing.  I've been drawing pictures and reading and making a new picture that the paper lists off.  One of them is a truck, and I drew a truck.

SCIENCE: We made a well with a pump.  If you dig deep enough you can make a pond and there's some water.  We did this game where we pretended we were building a new town and we had to look for water and it couldn't be salty or poisonous.
I also went to the museum of natural curiosity.  They have a new tree house exhibit.  I learned about different animals that live in the trees and the sounds they make.

ENGINEERING: I used my rocket kit to learn some more about carbon dioxide.  It's also known as CO2.  When you open a soda, the CO2 starts to come out so we put a balloon on it and the CO2 filled up the balloon with gas.  I also tried adding mentos and that made the CO2 come up out of the soda even faster.

KARATE: I got another stripe on my belt.  I got it because first before I passed off my kicks, and then just yesterday I passed off my one-steps. I did my first, second and third with someone in my class named Kimball.

LEARNING LOG WEEK 5

MATH:  I learned about symmetry.  Symmetry is where you can split something in half or fold it and both sides would look the same.  I did lots of worksheets finding and drawing symmetry.

LANGUAGE ARTS:  I did handwriting and writing.  I learned about a book called “Big Nate.”  All the sentences are simple and don’t help you learn anything.  The kids are mean to other kids and adults so it's not a very good book to read if you want to learn about being kind.  Then there’s another book I can’t remember what it’s called, but the first 30 sentences are hard but not too hard.  It also teaches about nature, being a good friend, and having a good character.  It teaches you not to make fun of people.  There are lots of good books to read that are better than some other books.
I got to make a fidget flipper.  It’s just paper folded up a certain way and you can flip it.  We made these with some homeschooling friends.

SCIENCE:  I learned about water in the world.  Only 1% is fresh water.  About 15% is frozen, and the rest is all saltwater.

ENGINEERING:  If you get a ruler and tie a string to it and hang it from the middle, then tape two balloons onto the sides then you take one off and you blow air into it then it proves air does weigh a little bit.  The side of the ruler with the balloon full of air goes down.  I learned this from my rocket kit from Tinker Crate.  Baking Soda mixed with Citric Acid and water creates a gas that also makes the balloon go up.

KARATE:  I reviewed some one-steps.  I did some kicks and punches.  I couldn't remember the third one-step, but I just remembered it.  You do an inside block, then punch, then round kick, then you ridge hand to their neck as soon as you land.  You only ever do this to protect yourself.  It's fun to practice, but I would not suggest doing this on someone unless you were in danger.

LEARNING LOG WEEK 4

MATH:  I used protractors again.  I learned a triangle is 180 degrees so if you know two of the angles you can add them together and subtract it from 180.

LANGUAGE ARTS: I'm reading a book of Classic Stories.  I'm working on cursive and drawing.  I worked on writing too.

SCIENCE: I went on a nature walk with my brothers.  We found a lizard and a butterfly and ant hills.  We also found a bird and plants.  I drew pictures of them.  I also learned about water.  Water can be adhesive and cohesive.  Adhesive means the water can stick to something else, and cohesive means it sticks together.  I can be a liquid and it can be a solid and a gas.  Water can also be called H2O.

ENGINEERING:  I mixed some baking soda and citric acid and put it in a balloon.  Then I had water and mixed it in a container and it started to bubble a bunch and the balloon would grow.  The balloon got bigger because it was using all the gas from what was formed from the water, citric acid and baking soda.

KARATE: I just reviewed some of my kicks and forms.  I got my picture taken and for my picture I did a phase II jumping side-kick.

LEARNING LOG WEEKS 1-3

MATH:
I did angles.  I'm enjoying reading the math book.  I used a protractor.  I found out if it's a big angle it's obtuse.  If it's small it's acute.  I wrote the degrees.

LANGUAGE ARTS: I did All About Reading.  I did handwriting, and I drew a picture of a horse and a bird in a little square box on the page.  I fixed some sentences and took out the "to be" verbs, like I wouldn't say, "The tree is beautiful."  I'd say, "The leaves flutter in the sky."

SCIENCE: We used pizza boxes and roasted some marshmallows with solar ovens with foil on them, and we roasted some s'mores.  We went to Idaho to see the solar eclipse.  While the moon was starting to barely cover the sun I used the special glasses.  It looked like the moon was taking a huge bite out of the sun.  When it was completely covered, it looked cool because you could see the white flames coming off, and you could take the glasses off too.
Later, we learned about water.  We used a dropper to put water on a penny, and it looked like the water was just turning into a huge bubble and would not fall off because water is cohesive.  Then we put water with green food coloring in a cup next to an empty cup.  We rolled up a paper towel and stuck it in both cups.  One side started to get wet, and the water slowly climbed up to the other side.  It's pulling against gravity because water is adhesive.

ENGINEERING: I built a bottle rocket.  Inside the rocket I put water.  Then I had a scoop ready with baking soda and citric acid.  I dumped it in, put the launch pad on, and then we put it on a hard and flat surface and let it shoot in the air because it would create a gas and eventually shoot off.  We had to be really fast because it would work fast.

KARATE: I'm a purple belt now.  I passed my last test.  I reviewed a one-step.  I know three one-steps.  I'm working towards my orange.  I've learned a lot of kicks and jump kicks.  This is a picture of me with my little brother who just started karate, and my big brother who's been doing karate for three years.  I've been doing karate for about four months.
